G.Nikolaidis Travel Award for EPC-V: applicant selection
A total of 29 applications from 10 countries were received until the deadline of April 1st. The committee has examined and rated all applications. It is true that the selection was not an easy task, since the majority of the applications would worth an award!
The applicant getting the highest rate, and subsequently the travel award, is Franz Goecke Saavedra, from CAU University of Kiel, GERMANY.
The first substitute in case that Mr. Franz Goecke Saavedra will be unable to participate to the congress, is Maria Lopez Parages, from Department of Ecology, Faculty of Science, University of Malaga, SPAIN.

G. Nikolaidis Travel Award
Following recommendations from members of the Hellenic Phycological Society (HEL.P.S.) and after acceptance from the HEL.P.S. Council “G. Nikolaidis Travel Award” was established with respect to the 5th European Phycological Congress.
Georgios Nikolaidis (1950-2010), from Biology department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, was a scientist working in the field of Phycology, with special and most recent research interest in the field of harmful algae. He actually initiated the Greek Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) monitoring project in accordance to national and EU recommendations.
The “G. Nikolaidis Travel Award” is established to support with the amount of 800€, stemming from HEL.P.S., one young phycologist.
Among the criteria for selection will be the following:
- Age below 35 years old
- Commitment to an oral or a poster presentation
- Quality or unique nature of science to be presented
- Demonstrated financial need
